So.....When is the best time to visit Sequim to see Lavender?
We receive daily phone calls. 90% of those calls are to ask if the lavender is in bloom or when is the best time to visit.
The first thing to know is all of Sequim’s lavender farms grow multiple varieties of lavender. Therefore there will never be a time to visit when all the fields are in bloom. Instead, each farm has different sections of their farm that bloom at different times.
English Lavenders bloom first. There are almost 100 cultivars in this species, Lavandula Angustifolia. The earliest blooming varieties typically start to bloom in mid June. In fact, it is June 2 today and we are already starting to see our earliest variety, Folgate, start to turn purple.
To recap. You will start seeing lavender in Sequim in mid June at most farms.
How Long do the Lavender Blooms Last?
After Folgate, an English Lavender, starts to bloom it is quickly followed by many different varieties of English lavender. The English lavenders will be in bloom until late July. During this time the Lavandin (Lavandula X Intermdedia) or French Lavenders begin to bloom. The French lavenders start to bloom in mid July and will continue until mid-August most years.
So mid June until mid August you have Lavender. But, When is the best time to see Lavender in Sequim?
In my humble opinion there is not a bad time to visit the farms during the season. However, my favorite time is early July or very late in June. At these time you will see the English lavenders at their peak and the French lavenders starting to turn colors.
